Who Cares (Gaillardon/Hardy)

Who Cares

Who cares about the peacock and the partridge and the pigeon, who cares about the curve of your shoulders when night is thickening, who cares about the mongoose and the minnow and the mallard, who cares about the hooves and the horns of the ibex?

Who cares about the sallow and the spruce and the sycamore, who cares about the tracery of your veins when dawn is slowly bleeding, who cares about the bramble and the bracken and the buttercup, who cares about the leaves and the stems of the spinifex?

Now trade and legal tender have made tender illegal.

Now it’s the reign of the index.

Who cares about the brook and the torrent and the mountain stream, who cares about the broken glass in your eyes when morning is hardly breathing, who cares about the low tides and the shallows and the sandbanks, who cares about the weight and the edge of the silex?

Now it’s all about shekels and dibs, about brass, tin and dough, about bolly and bread, about swag, boot and booty

Now it’s all about assets and accounts, about rates and transactions, about shares and debentures, about profit, stocks and turnovers.

Now trade and legal tender have made tender illegal.

Now it’s the reign of the index.
